Pigmentation

Pigmentation, or hyperpigmentation, is presented as dark spots or patches in the skin, which are made up of melanin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for the intrinsic genetic colour of the skin. Dark brown pigment is called Eumelanin; red pigment is called Phaeomoglobin. Conditions such as pigmented lesions are caused by abnormal production of melanin, making it visible on the skin.

Melanogenis is the skin process of producing melanin, or pigmentation. Melanogeneis is an essential process of the skin in order for our skin, eyes and hair to have colour, however it is often stimulated by the skin when it is attempting to provide itself natural protection from internal or external stimuli.

There are intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli for triggering the pigmentation production cascade in the skin. Pigmentation can be caused by a number of factors, including UV rays, fragrance applied to the skin, heat and inflammation, hormonal changes, trauma to the skin, chemicals applied to the skin, Vitamin A or C deficiencies, certain medications and Essential Fatty Acid Deficiency (EFAD).

There are two forms of pigmentation: Epidermal and Dermal. Epidermal pigment often presents as freckling, usually as a result of sun damage or . Dermal pigmentation does not respond as readily to treatment as epidermal pigmentation, due to it being free floating, extracellular pigmentation deposits in the base of the skin.
